Week 13: Local Climate Change

1. What did you do in lab today?​

  • In our lab this week, we split up into groups and completed presentations about climate change. For our presentations, we focused on three categories, all dealing with climate change: temperature, agricultural plant life, and precipitation. My group was assigned the topic of temperature and climate change, where we discussed local, regional, and global data, as well as questions and statements. 
2. What was the big question?
  • I would say the big question during our lab was "What are the different effects climate change has on our environment, and how do these problems continue to get worse?"

  1. What did you learn?​
    • When reading this chapter, I learned about many events and effects climate change has had on our local community and world. Overall, I read more about hotter temperatures, more precipitation, more drought, agricultural impact, and habitat changes. 
  2. What was most helpful?​
    • The most helpful thing when reading this chapter was the numerous amounts of charts and statistics. These things made it easier for me to comprehend and see how climate change is truly affecting our Earth. More specifically, the charts that share comparisons help me see the urgent need for a change. 
  3. What do you need more information on?​
    • I believe I still need a little bit more information on the specific habitat changes (including the Goldfinch) being affected by climate change. I am still a little confused about what specifically is harming these habitats. 
5. What questions, concerns, and/or comments do you have?
  • A question I continue to have is "How does one determine the climate statement, and what does that process look like?"

This week, during our lab, we got the option to conduct one of the two phenomena we did during week 11. Our group decided to go more in-depth on the "Melting Ice" lab. We were initially confused as to why the ice melted faster on a metal surface than on a wooden surface. Addy Junge Week 2: Space: The Final Frontier 1. What did you do in lab today?​ NO LAB. It was a Holiday. 2. What was the big question?​ During our lecture, I would say the biggest question would have been "What were some significant discoveries throughout the years about the solar system and space travel?" Some of the other big questions we discussed were how to measure the Earth, who has been on the Moon, and the possibilities of future space travel. 3. What did you learn in Thursday’s discussion?​ Here are my notes from the lecture: 4. Week 1 Notes: Sun, Earth, & Moon - Science Methods II (Addy Junge)

Addy Junge Sun, Earth, & Moon Lab Questions: 1. How the phases of the moon occur? To the best of my knowledge, the phases of the moon occur due to the rotation and lighting of the Earth and the moon when aligned with the Sun. When aligned a certain way, I believe the Earth blocks the light from the Sun that reflects on the moon. Therefore, we only see the lit part of the moon on certain nights.  Over the course of 28 days, the Moon goes through eight phases, where the Sun reflects on the Moon. As the days go by, the Moon moves slightly, reflecting different parts of the Moon's surface. 2. What causes the seasons? When discussing seasons, I believe it is when the Northern Hemisphere is either further or closer to the Sun. Throughout the year, we experience four distinct seasons that change gradually.  Throughout the year, seasons are caused by the amount of direct sunlight hitting the Earth's surface.
